It had actually been a rather decent day, for once. Ilia had won a bottle of Rebel Yell off of one of the residents from another cabin, and had proceeded down to the river – to his now favorite haunt, perched atop a rocky outcropping. He had his phone and his earbuds and laid back on the not overly warm stone to drown out the sounds of Nature with some ShyFX and drown his boredom in bourbon. Managing a good buzz, he’d started to get a bit horny, for no other reason than he was seventeen and male, and had started flipping through his porn stash on his phone. That had been enough to impel him to get up and return to the cabin, to look for his go to source of relief.
Funny enough, Arius was nowhere to be seen – although Ilia didn’t really find it so damn funny. Not at all. He was frustrated, and irritated, and he waited around a bit, until he remembered – hadn’t the little bitch said something about a party? Yeah – Arius had mentioned something like that, but Ilia had been a bit dismissive. It sounded lame. He couldn’t remember if the boy had said a day – but it might have been today, or tonight, actually. It was going to be at the Lodge – would have to be pretty sad if they were going to do shit in plain view of the staff, right? Ilia thought about it for a few, then decided to go check it out. Maybe he was wrong. But if Arius was there, and if there was free booze, then he might be inclined to stay – for a bit.
He crossed the space from cabins to Lodge, with far less of a buzz going, which was a crying shame. He’d left his own half consumed pint in the cabin, having no desire to share with anyone. The lights were on inside the Lodge, but that didn’t mean anything. It was pretty much open 24/7, to anyone who wanted to be in there, for food, or whatever. But as he got closer, he could definitely hear some beats, and his guess about what might be going down inside seemed to be confirmed.
He walked in and looked around. There weren’t a hell of a lot of people, and he didn’t see Arius. But the music and the nearly empty bottles on the various tables seemed to indicate that this was some sort of a…thing. Spotting a familiar face – although one he wasn’t especially engaged with – he wandered over to the girly boy and asked only, ”You seen Arius?”

Tray had floated about a bit, talking to just about everyone who had shown up, at one point or another. The night was still very young, and he’d only had one small drink so far, and was prepared to just hang out and see what developed. When Ilia wandered in, he watched the boy, as he looked about. Tracey was kind of surprised when Ilia stepped over to him. Their few interactions had been pretty brief. Tracey’s attempts to be friendly with yet another newcomer had fallen flat, and he’d gotten the message loud and clear – Ilia wasn’t interested in being friends. So he’d left the dude alone, because that was how Tracey rolled.
It seemed things were going to be no different tonight, because all Ilia did was ask after Arius, another relatively new resident. Tracey didn’t know what their relationship might be to each other, but he’d seen them together, here and there. He didn’t think anything of it, so he replied, ”I think he’s in the kitchen with Emmett.”.
Ilia had sort of grunted and moved on, making his way to the kitchen door.
To be honest, Emmett was getting pretty bored with hiding out in the kitchen. He’d fled there to escape having to be an unwilling spectator to his friend’s sexual performance. Now he was well ready to just leave the party and head back to his cabin – or maybe take a walk. He’d consumed a fair amount of the vodka he’d grabbed before running away. As he’d never drank before – except for maybe a few sips of wine at some family dinner or something – the effect was pronounced, and he was beginning to wobble a bit. Arius had come with him, at first. Then the other boy had rejoined those in the open living area, and then come back. Emmett hadn’t even tried to make an excuse for why he was secreting himself away from the others, except to say he was going to find something to cook. It was probably a good thing he hadn’t gotten any further than pulling some bacon and eggs out of the fridge, because drunk Emmett around open flames would have been a disaster in the making. Maybe that was what had brought Arius back a third time – to check up on the increasingly intoxicated redhead.
Emmett had just been on the cusp of trying to enunciate that he was fine, when he felt the urge to hurl. He had turned, and there was the sink, and he had at least aimed for it. Most of his stomach contents had hit their mark, a small bit ran down the front edge of the counter. He had retched again, and again, and his long hair – left loose for braiding – was greatly in peril of becoming soaked at the ends. Somehow, Arius had managed to hold onto his own stomach as he hurried to help – holding the long strands of copper back from Emmet’s face. As the heaving stopped – for the moment – Arius’ hand rested on Emmet’s back, and Emmet in turn had, unthinking, placed an arm around Arius’ waist, as the world tilted crazily.
It was, of course, at that moment that Ilia shoved open the swinging door and walked in on them.
When Arius had initially hidden in the kitchen, it was to avoid the spectacle outside the doors where two of the party goers were putting on a little show. Arius was grateful for the excuse to leave, but he'd felt bad about ditching Jake. He'd told Emmett he was going to look and ask if Jake would want to know where they were, though he honestly doubted Jake would. He had no illusions that Jake would be focusing on partying by now, but nonetheless he looked around and eventually told Jake that he and Emmett were in the kitchen.
Arius had intended on going straight back to the kitchen, not wanting to be left alone in the party and not wanting to have ditched Emmett, but as he pushed passed the people in the lodge he had the urgent need to relieve himself. He quickly stuck his head in the door to make sure Emmett was still there before running off again.
Quickly he ducked past the rest of the people and got to the bathroom, ignoring the two guys who were snogging outside and spending quite a few minutes in there. By the time he left, the people were no longer outside, probably having moved somewhere more romantic and less gross than outside of a bathroom. The thought occurred to Arius that it was probably the less than healthy lunch he'd had that day, but his stomach had settled and Arius finally headed back to the kitchen.
As he returned, Arius noticed how drunk Emmett really was. He wasn't really sure how comfortable he was with people being drunk. His dad, well, fake dad, was more cruel when he drank, even though neither Arius or his mother would admit it. Maybe she didn't admit it because she'd never been hurt by his words, Arius always seemed to be the butt of that joke. But Jake came back to the cabin while drunk plenty of times, Arius would offer him water and food when he was hungover and hiding under the covers, and Emmett seemed nice, so when Emmett leaned over the sink to hurl, Arius jumped before moving over, willing to help however he could.
He pulled Emmett's hair back carefully as he puked again, finding a rubber band on the counter and messily tying it back, still, it kept the hair out of Emmett's face, so it would work. He smiled sympathetically and moved to get Emmett a glass of water as Ilia burst into the room.
Of course, Arius didn't know that his boyfriend's name was actually Ilia, as far as he knew, he was dating a guy named 'Gav'. In all honesty, Arius had no idea about who he was dating. He jumped a little at the sudden sound and smiled when 'Gav' entered. "Gav, hey, I thought you said you weren't coming?" Arius handed Emmett the glass of water and walked closer to his boyfriend, moving his hand to Gav's upper arm and smiled happily.
The sight that greeted him upon entering the kitchen was an unexpected one. There was Arius, getting all cozy with the redheaded creep that Ilia had had that little encounter with a couple of weeks previously. He wasn’t so close to the two that the smell of puke immediately registered. So for all intents and purposes it just looked like the two other boys were touching in a mildly ‘familiar” (intimate?) way. Ilia’s eyes narrowed and he wasted no time crossing to them, a frown on his face to match the smoldering anger in his dark eyes.
Arius, of course, jerked back from whatever it was he’d been about to do, and came towards him. The passing of the glass – which no doubt contained some of the booze from the near empty bottle on the island – did nothing to allay any suspicions of what had been going on here, behind his back. Ilia froze for a moment, glaring at them, and when Arius opened his stupid mouth to say the obvious – and reached to touch him – Ilia brushed his hand away.
”Yeah?” he sneered. ”I can fuckin’ see that!” His eyes darted from Arius to Emmett and back to Arius, cold, hard stones set under a downturned brow. ”Guess I changed my mind.” Those eyes stabbed into Arius, silently accusing, as he asked, ”Guess you made other plans, hm?”
Emmett was just starting to feel the kind of relief which comes after hurling – accompanied of course with the nasty, acrid taste of stomach acid in his mouth and throat – when the dark haired guy walked in on them. He had just turned to take the glass of water Arius had offered, so he was partially turned away from the sink and towards Ilia. He felt a pang of dismay, seeing the guy, because the one time they had met had left a taste in Emmett’s mouth every bit as sour as the one he had just now. Arius’ face lit up, though – he seemed quite happy to see the jerk – and he called him by name as he moved over to him. Emmett warily turned a bit more towards the two of them, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. His head was spinning and his stomach was already beginning to roil once again.
It seemed that whatever was going on between the other two boys, Mr. Dickhead wasn’t happy about something. Emmett wasn’t following the ball too well. He wasn’t even really trying. But he could tell from the sound of Jerkface’s voice that he was pissed about something. He wasn’t able to do anything about it though, even if he had understood, so he just stood there, hip propped against the edge of the sink, hand gripping it to steady himself, looking sort of owlishly at the two.
"What are you talking about? I didn't make other plans, I invited you to come to the party with me." Though it was a statement, it sounded more like a question than anything else. Arius didn't really know what to say, he knew he'd invited Gav to come with him. Gav had brushed Arius' hand aside and Arius frowned. "I'm glad you came though, I like spending time with you. Kinda been in the kitchen the whole time with Emmett." Arius said innocently, smiling a little and motioning towards the other guy, "Jake introduced us and we were talking about books."
Arius moved his hand back to Gav's arm, smiling softly for a moment, "If you want I can grab you something to drink, the fridge is right here anyways. Emmett and I are just kinda hiding from the rest of the crowd.. it was a bit.. much."
In Arius' opinion it was too loud and chaotic to really enjoy the party, granted, he spent most of the time in the bathroom or in the kitchen, so he wasn't even exposed to the worst of it, but it was still a lot more going on than Arius was used to.
Ilia remained silent for a moment, glowering at first Emmett and then Arius, his jaw muscle popping as he clenched it tight. Once again, when Arius touched him, he glared at the boy’s hand as if it was an offense before god and all of mankind. This time, he shrugged it off and stepped past Arius, and over to Emmett. He shoved the fingers of one hand against the redhead’s chest, growling, ”What the fuck do you think you’re doing with my bitch, you fucking asswipe?”
The slight shove was enough to send Emmett stepping back a bit – as much to try to get away from the pissed off guy as from the physical thrust. Was he Arius’ boyfriend or something? Emmett didn’t know and didn’t have the mental acuity at the moment to try to figure it out. He wobbled backwards, trying to say something like, ”Hey, no…”, not sure why he was the target of the guy’s wrath. But his legs were unsteady, his balance worse and his feet as clumsy as ever. He sort of tripped over them and started to wobble even more, his arms reaching out for something to steady himself, and to keep upright. One hand slammed against the edge of the counter, the other sort of brushed past Ilia’s face, the edges of a few of his fingernails lightly scraping over the other boy’s skin.
In the next second, Ilia had grabbed the offending hand, twisted Emmett’s arm around and shoved him, hard. Emmett went flying, landing with a crash on the floor, his head just missing the fridge.”You fucking want a piece of me, you cocksucker?” Ilia practically yelled, already moving as if he meant to wallop the shit out of the hapless, drunken kid.
The look Arius got from Gav made him shrink back slightly, he barely managed to say "Hey, wait a sec." before his boyfriend pushed past him, causing Arius to stumble slightly. He looked up to see Gav pushing a finger against Emmett's chest and Arius quickly moved over to Gav's side, "Hey, leave him alone." Arius started, not sounding confident at all and a lot softer in volume that Gav had been just seconds before.
It was very sudden when Emmett fell, just barely touching Gav before Gav grabbed his arm and turned him around, "Gav, no!" Arius shouted, panicked and moving to pull at Gav's arm to get him to let go, "Leave him alone! He didn't do anything so just.. so just fuck off!"
Swearing was very unusual for Arius, he'd grown up being told that pretty much everything, including swearing, was a sin, but the panic seized him and he couldn't just let Gav hurt someone. He'd seemed to make Gav pause for a moment, so suddenly all of the words in Arius' head started pouring out.
"What are you even doing here? You said you weren't coming and now you're trying to beat up someone who I wanted to be friends with? You always show up whenever you want something from me, don't you! So just.. just go and we can talk later but you can't just hit people, Gav!" Arius' words were rushed and he was stuttering nervously as he spoke, still trying to figure out completely what was happening. He looked hopefully at Gav, hoping he'd let go of Emmett, who after this, probably didn't want anything to do with Arius or so Arius thinks.
Spring is finally upon us here in lovely NC. It's warm, soft weather. Upper 50's and into the low 60's. Lingering breezes. The smell of flowers, buzzing honey bees and baby animals. Shuck those hats and gloves and go for scarves, sandals and capris.
